"Charles Fort, who died in 1932, would have nothing to do with the subculture of followers that grew up around his work. All the while, Fort's humor and skepticism have served me well. "I discovered the works of Charles Fort in 1959 and jumped into the pursuit of the unknown in the decades that followed. The damned data Charles Fort gathered covered so many marvels, mysteries, and monsters-including unidentified aerial objects, frog falls, ship disappearances, red rains, earthquake lights, lake monsters, animal mutilations, psychic explosions, and much, much more. "'The Book of the Damned' has inspired scientists, science fiction writers, movie makers, and devotees for almost a hundred years. The dynamics Barbara Bretton accomplishes in “ Casting Spells” are perfect! Men, read on. Another percentage is watered-down by authors being too quirky, or tempering down mystical phenomenon until it has no oomph. Followers of Bacchus, the god of wine, awaken in the marketplace of Amphissa, Greece, where they have wandered from their home in Phocis during a night of ritual dancing. So, reinforce your intentions with action. Of course, don’t forget - actions speak louder than words. The more you focus on what you don’t want, the more likely it is to enter into your physical reality. If you know what you want, you need to shift your thoughts so that it reflects what you really want. It will respond, it always responds, but if you just focus on how awesome it would be to make more money, you may recieve ten bucks instead of the tens of thousands that would make a significant change in your life.” - You are a Badass at Making Money by Jen Sincero, pg. You wouldn’t go to a deli and order a sandwich by saying, ‘Hi, yes, I’d like a sandwich, please.’ You’d order the specific kind you want: ‘Roast beef, mayo no mustard, pickles, lettuce, tomato, on a roll, please - actually not that roll, can I have that bigger roll over there?” And you would, hence, recieve the specific sandwich you ordered. “Specifics allow the universe to fulfill your order. If I wish to bring abundance into my life, I need to be specific about what I want. Throughout the book, Jen focuses on the reader’s mindset. And just because one brand of Christianity is different than another, it doesn't mean that that person or those people who are "different" aren't Christian. Obviously this is a sore spot for me, but I think that if someone (or a group of people) believes in the Bible and in Jesus Christ as the Savior of the world, they fall under the umbrella of Christianity. But the protagonist, as she "finds" Christianity, and "accepts" Jesus Christ as her "personal Lord and Savior," constantly says things like, "I've never learned about forgiveness or Jesus or grace before-all this is so foreign to me I don't know what to think." Since she was raised Amish and had been to church at least once every week, of course she "knew Jesus"! Give me a break. I don't know much about the Amish (the protagonist was raised Amish), but I do know that they consider themselves to be Christian: they believe in the Bible and in Jesus Christ. I consider myself to be a tolerant person when it comes to religion-I think everyone should find what works for them and stick with it-but I really hate it when people who belong to one religion make judgments about those from another. Besides the unbelievable plot developments, the poor writing, the forced and cheesy dialogue, and the fact that this easily could have been one book instead of three, I think the thing that most drove me crazy about this series (particularly this last book) was the author's constant and redundant preaching of her own narrow view of Christianity. The novel was inspired by the author’s experiences as an editor on the foreign desk at The Washington Post and as a child growing up in the Mojave Desert. The “Scholars” live under the oppression of the “Martials,” (aka Masks) who silently assassinate insurgents. Set in a high-fantasy world with echoes of ancient Rome, An Ember in the Ashes tells the story of two teenagers fighting to survive under the Empire’s brutal, militaristic regime, which has outlawed reading among the once-powerful “Scholar” class. Gillian Levinson, Associate Editor, Razorbill, will edit the novel, which is scheduled for publication in winter 2015. Sally Willcox at CAA handled the sale of film rights while Alexandra Machinist of Janklow & Nesbit negotiated the book deal with Ben Schrank, President and Publisher of Razorbill. Film rights have already been sold to Paramount Pictures in a seven-figure deal, also pre-emptive, with Academy Award-winning producer Mark Johnson ( Breaking Bad, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Notebook) attached. New York, NY - Razorbill, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, has acquired Sabaa Tahir’s highly-anticipated debut novel An Ember in the Ashes in a major pre-empt. |
